Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS PEDAGOOG?

Pedagoog is an online pedagogical library and web-app that provides staff in primary and secondary education with on-demand access to thousands of carefully selected, curated and frequently updated articles, courses and resources to support a truly ‘continuous’ approach to professional development - together with the means to rate different articles, personalise, organise and share their research with colleagues.

WHY WILL ALL STAFF BENEFIT FROM USING PEDAGOOG FOR CPD?

For those in Leadership roles, theoretical and visionary approaches to curriculum design, promoting academic achievement and pupil and staff wellbeing are always evolving. Using Pedagoog helps ensure that school leaders at all levels are able to access the most recent discussion and key developments and debates in their field and so adopt the practices that produce the best results for their context.

Working in primary and secondary education is rewarding because it is so demanding. Excellent delivery in the classroom requires practitioners who are not just highly skilled in the delivery of the curriculum, but accurate and insightful in their evaluation of pupil knowledge, understanding, motivation, learning abilities and difficulties. It requires educators to stay up to date with behavioural, metacognitive and organisational strategies that support learning in and outside of the classroom, as well as the latest pedagogical developments in their subject field.

HOW DOES USING PEDAGOOG STRENGTHEN A CULTURE OF CPD IN SCHOOLS?

Schools with a strong culture of professional development demonstrate an appreciation of the complexities and challenges involved in successful teaching and learning and the need to provide ongoing support to enable staff to develop these skills through a positive, programmatic and personalised approach. Inspired by studies such as ‘Developing Great Subject Teaching’ [Cordingly et al. 2018] which points to the need for a more subject-specific and personalised approach to increase the effectiveness of CPD, Pedagoog’s on tap, online and on trend library offers a cost-effective solution for Schools to use to help embed a culture of continuing professional development.

HOW DOES USING PEDAGOOG ADD VALUE TO TEACHERS, SCHOOLS AND PUPILS?

Pedagoog’s easy to navigate structure helps staff quickly find what they need but also invites them to discover new ideas by browsing sections. All key topics have a broad range of articles, from ‘top tips’ to in-depth research papers, to ensure that debates can be considered in a critical fashion and that users can find the right length of read for their available study time.

As recent report from the Education Policy Institute (28th April 2021) is recommending that the Government fund a minimum of 35 hours a year of high quality CPD for teachers. They estimate that this could lead to higher GCSE grades, resulting in higher lifetime earnings for pupils of over £6,000. Pedagoog is the right delivery mechanism to support this initiative with the widest range of articles and topics available in a low-cost format that can be personalised or used to promote whole school initiatives.

Using Pedagoog helps teachers to help the pupils they teach; Sutton Trust research has shown that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds gain up to one year’s additional learning from more effective teachers.

HOW DOES PEDAGOOG SUPPORT PERSONALISED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

Pedagoog gives every individual control of their professional development agenda. The Bookmark and Portfolio tools enable users to manage and organise their learning journey at a pace to suit them. Every entry in Pedagoog has been read, summarised and catalogued to enable users to quickly find the material most suitable for their learning needs and interests.

For those embarking on career development, the structure of the library, which is organised into specific skill, subject and leadership themes, also gives users an insight into the many areas of expertise and career development opportunities within the profession, together with access to the resources required to build a personal portfolio to support advancement.

HOW CAN PEDAGOOG HELP ACCELERATE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

Pedagoog’s structure enables users to quickly find their way around. Each of the 3 key sections is divided into sub-categories reflecting the core themes. For example, users looking to improve pupil recall and performance can navigate via the Skills section to Memory and Metacognition where they can use different filters to search for specific concepts or browse for new ideas. Separate sections for Courses, Resources and Blogs also help connect users more quickly to ‘the best next thing’.

Features such as the ability to rate the usefulness of different articles and resources and share Portfolios mean users also benefit from the collective wisdom of other educators using the library.

HOW CAN PEDAGOOG HELP ME SUPPORT COLLEAGUES OR THOSE I LINE MANAGE?

Teachers and School leaders are best placed to make the decisions on the best practice for their local context. Through Pedagoog, each user can create Portfolios which can be shared with colleagues to provoke thought, debate and discussion.

Whether it is for an individual, a department, or a whole school initiative – Portfolios can be made visible to colleagues and updated with articles, courses and resources to direct exploration of a topic, or enrich the thinking and planning behind the implementation of key policies.

WHY IS PEDAGOOG SUCH A COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR CPD IN SCHOOLS?

All Schools support the continuing professional development of their staff. Research has demonstrated, however, that the traditional methods of CPD such as whole staff inset are not as effective as personalised CPD - CPD which is closely matched to the professional development needs of the individual [Teacher Development Trust, 2015]. The cost (including that of lesson cover) associated with sending individuals on external courses means that a relatively small percentage of staff currently benefit from personalised CPD each year – and for those that do, there is usually little by way of follow-up available to help embed their learning.

In contrast, Pedagoog’s carefully curated and continuously updated library connects educators with the latest research and discussion in their field of research and enables their incremental and continuous professional development. Building portfolios of research which can be shared with colleagues in the School facilitates the learning of all, as well as supporting whole school development initiatives.
